Finish out Your Summer with These Can’t-Miss Local Events

As August comes to a close, the last full month of summer is almost over, and fall is just around the corner. If you’re feeling a little blue about the changing of season—or just looking for a way to say goodbye to summer in style—there are plenty of upcoming community events to look forward to!

Get out and get involved with the Port Liberte and Jersey City communities, and pencil a few of these happenings into your schedule.

Groove on Grove

An outdoor concert.

When: Wednesdays from 6pm – 9pm

Where: Grove Street PATH Plaza

What: A weekly music series that has been going on since May, Groove on Grove will be finishing up its run in September. The series brings together local musicians, performers, businesses, and sponsors for a totally free night of smooth sounds, local goods, and community fun. If you haven’t been, be sure to check out one of the last few concerts!

Community Farmers’ Markets

A farmers' market.

When: Times vary

Where: Locations vary

What: You might think that the end of summer means the end of farmers’ markets, but there are tons of local spots that stay open through the fall! The Bayonne Farmers’ Market stretches through October, while the Historic Downtown, Riverview, Friends of Van Vorst Park, and Hoboken Farmers’ Markets all last until November or December.

Check out my previous post all about each market, and get your fill of fresh and local goods!

Hoboken Italian Festival

A street festival.

When: September 5th – 8th

Where: Frank Sinatra Drive, Hoboken

What: Drawing inspiration from the 1399 “Feast of the Madonna Dei Martiri,” the Hoboken Italian Festival is entering its 93rd year this year. Held right on the waterfront, the event features music, fireworks, amusement rides, local vendors, and —of course—plenty of Italian food. You can also expect a few unique highlights, like the carrying of Madonna through the streets and the subsequent blessing of the feet.

Hamilton Park Conservancy BBQ Festival

Meet on a grill.

When: September 14th, 12pm – 8pm

Where: Hamilton Park Conservancy

What: Ringing in its ninth year of operation, the BBQ Festival supports the Hamilton Park Conservancy. You can expect a day filled with all styles of BBQ from local vendors, live music, drinks, and games for all ages!

All About Downtown Street Fair

Face painting.

When: September 21st, 12pm – 8pm

Where: Newark Ave. between Grove St. and Coles St.

What: All About Downtown is maybe the biggest community event of the year—so you really don’t want to miss it! The fair will be full of fun and festivities, including hundreds of vendors, a Kidszone complete with rides and face paintings, beer gardens, local food vendors, and more. Last year, over 40,000 people came out for the event, and this year promises to be just as impressive!

Hoboken Arts & Music Festival

A woman on stage at a festival.

When: September 29th, 11am – 6pm

Where: Washington St. between Observer Hwy. & 7th St.

What: Although the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival happens a few days after the end of summer, it’s the perfect gateway event for saying goodbye to one season and welcoming in the next. Entering its 26th year, the festival brings in more than 200 artists, crafters, vendors, restaurants, and businesses. Admission is totally free, so feel free to swing by, listen to one of the three live music stages, and explore the local wares.
